Description
Shaker Hanging Shelf
Made from locally grown wild Cherry, or Oak. This hanging shelf is adapted from an original which rests in the Andrews collection. The natural tones of both the Oak and wild Cherry are accentuated by a natural hand rubbed finish. At home in any setting, either contemporary or period, this adaptation differs from the original in one respect. The shelves are attached to the uprights by a sliding dovetail joint. This adds to the integrity and overall strength of the unit, while also making it possible to disassemble, for easy transport or storage. A single concealed screw holds each joint in place, while in use. The dovetails also add a subtle distinction which sets this interpretation apart. Demonstrating traditional know-how and quality of build.
The Shakers would use a hanging shelf of this type, by hanging it from the pegs of their peg rails. To keep small items of daily use, tidy and easily to hand. Today they can be used in the same manner. Or as a spice rack or similar in the kitchen, or for various articles in the bathroom, or to store DVDs or perhaps display a collection. In fact, there are so many uses, the list is endless.
In Solid Cherry, or Oak, The Shaker Hanging Shelf has dimensions of 760mm X 690mm. The lower shelf has a depth of 165mm, central shelf 145mm depth and the top shelf 120mm depth.
Each Hanging Shelf, is entirely handmade once an order has been placed. Accordingly, some variations are possible. Email if you need something slightly different, or if you prefer a choice of wood. As a price guide, as Oak is a little cheaper than Cherry, Walnut would be more expensive. Changes to dimensions affect the price to a lesser degree, but the cost of transport may be affected. This hanging shelf is made from wild Cherry, or alternatively Oak or Walnut, grown in sustainably managed forests, a few kilometres from my workshop. This practice is an important part of the philosophy that accompanies all the pieces which I create.
